Budget-Friendly Activities in the Laurel Highlands
For a budget-friendly activity in the Laurel Highlands, hiking fits the bill. With most trails having year-round access, there is no better way to get outside and enjoy nature. Biking, hiking, fishing, and sightseeing are all low-cost and budget-friendly activities, perfect for families, a day out with friends, or even for yourself.
Please be advised that some trails will be challenging if you are not used to hiking. We recommend checking out a map online to find a trail that best suits your abilities.
Laurel Hill State Park
This state park is the shortest distance from the cabin, about 15 minutes, and boasts many beautiful trails. Laurel Hill State Park has trails of all difficulties, perfect no matter your hiking experience. From Pumphouse Trail to Hemlock Trail, you are bound to find something that suits your speed while also enjoying the beauty of nature.
Laurel Summit State Park
Laurel Summit State Park is only about 25 minutes from Holtheim Hideaway and is home to the Wolf Rocks Overlook. This trail is flat overall, but depending on the weather, it can be bumpy. No matter the time of year, the Wolf Rocks Overlook always boasts a stunning view. Additional trails at Laurel Summit State Park include High Point Trail, Mill Run Trail, and Shelter Rock Trail.
Laurel Summit State Park is part of Forbes State Forest, which leads to more than 250 miles of trails all over the area.
Forbes State Forest
Holtheim Hideaway is perfectly placed within Forbes State Forest. Because the forest has more than fifty thousand acres, the Pennsylvania DCNR website breaks down trails per division, depending on how far out you want to venture from the property. Each trail and activity permitted in each area is listed here.
Further details on difficulty, length, and what activities are allowed on each trail can be found on the Pennsylvania DCNR website or All Trails if you have an account. As always, when out in nature, please respect the land and leave no trace.
Fall Foliage

Did you know the Laurel Highlands was listed as the second-best destination for seeing fall foliage in the United States by USA Today? Even though we are past peak colors, some trails, and parks still show beautiful views that can’t be beat.Â
The Laurel Highlands is a perfect year-round destination, no matter the age. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of life may not always be easy, but staying at Holtheim Hideaway and exploring the area around it may just be the quiet getaway you have been looking for.
